Workday Charity Open – Who to look out for

The formula for success

Looking to Muirfield Village Golf Club for the next two weeks in a row, we find ourselves in the great Jack Nicklaus’ back yard. The course is beautiful, it is tricky and it can bite ya! Golfers will be navigating the tight avenues off the tee box and then face the small undulating bent grass greens that can roll away from you in a hurry! Steady hands on the flat stick will bring the big W.

The educated picks

Our first pick is a tough one as we have some solid contenders teeing it up this week. Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele have all paid their entry fee, but the big gun we are going to back is none other than Mr Consistency, “Rip city roll purely Patrick Cantlay”. Cantlay is coming off a rest having not played in Detroit and a T11 finish at the Travelers. If you are looking to emulate a solid golf game, then watch this gent ping it around the course. He is stable and gives nothing to the course in the sense of mistakes and purely executed golf shots.

Our second pick is a senior who can still hit bombs and has the hands of a surgeon when it comes to those nasty up and downs. Phil the Thrill Mickelson is back at it after sitting out last week’s event. Mickelson may have to tone down the bomb hitting, however with some good showing at the Travelers, he looks to have regained some confidence. When Phil gets it going, he can be a serious contender who loves to add trophies to his collection of 44 PGA beauties. He has to wear those shades though, better yet… lift the trophy with those shades on for an Instagram selfie would be second to none!

Our British pick for the week is going to be Matt Fitzpatrick. Matt had a strong finish at the RBC with a T14. Unfortunately, he missed the cut at the Travelers, but with a week off we believe he is fresh and ready to throw darts at the flag sticks, something which he is so notorious for doing. Matt also possesses the ability to roll the rock better than anyone out on tour. He has a putting stroke to be desired and will serve him well on the bent grass greens at Muirfield Village.

The outsider

Our Sleeper for the week is an Austrian golfer by the name of Sepp Straka. Sepp is currently lying 67th in the FedEx Cup after a T8 finish last week.  Interestingly, he has fired a final round 67 at the RBC Hertigae and the Rocket Mortgage. This indicates that Sepp knows how to close and given an opportunity, may deliver under the Sunday pressures.

The recap

To Recap our picks for this week are:

  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Phil Mickelson
  • Matt Fitzpatrick
  • Sepp Straka
