The Charles Schwab Challenge – Who to look out for

Golf is back!

I bet we all cannot wait to sit in front of the TV this week and watch the PGA Tour players battle it out at Colonial. In this post we are going to venture a guess as to who will contend this week and who to look out for come Sunday afternoon in Fort Worth Texas.

The “Big Dawg” has entered the field and I suspect we will be seeing some of those driver rippers we are all too familiar with. Rory “number one in the world” Mcilroy can never be written off… but the question is, has he prepared well enough during the down time? Rory is worth a mention as someone to look out for, but I personally don’t feel that the course is set up for the “Big Dawg”. Dustin Johnson (DJ) and Jon Rahmbo (Jon Rahm) may also be worth a consideration… But again, DJ seems to be struggling to find form and well Rahmbo, I may be shooting myself in the foot for not picking him. You can never count the Spaniard out. Talking about Spaniards, Sergio Garcia has entered and he has seen some success out on the course before, having won at Colonial in the past.

What is required

After walking the course it must be noted that this course is suited to a ball striker with an emphasis on accuracy, Garcia may be in for a shout… That is, if the putter arrives in the bag this week and heats up. Two other mentions would be defending champion Kevin Na Na Na Na and Charles Howell III (Chucky Three Sticks). However, my vote will go towards Mr Solid…Webb Simpson! I fancy this gent’s chances around Colonial. Tee to green he is always on the money, keeping it in play and giving himself opportunities. Oh please let the putter behave and Webb will surely contend!

Next is someone who has a disciplined putter in the bag, this is Rickie Fowler and he is sure to have the camera on him while playing Sunday afternoon. His attitude paired with the smoothest putting stroke around town creates a recipe for success. All Fowler needs to do is get it on the green, and the game is on!

For our UK pick, I would definitely have to say Danny Willett. Danny has recently found some form after the walk about he had taken post winning the Masters. Danny is a steady golfer and has the ability to get hot on the greens. Lets hope the break has not hindered his touch.

Going under the radar

The “under dawg” (Underdog) of the week would have to be HV3! This guy is a total legend and has the game to get the “W”. Harold Varner III is one of those golfers who has a win waiting for him around the corner. His attitude matched by a solid all round game can provide the catalyst that will get the job done out there.

To recap, the course is a parkland golf course with narrow fairways and small greens. This puts a premium on finding fairways off the tee and have a rock solid short game. Therefore, here are the Baller Corner picks for the week:

  • Webb Simpson
  • Rickie Fowler
  • Danny Willett
  • Harold Varner III
